As a company that is bootstrapped to build its cutting-edge technology, we've demonstrated that limited resources do not hinder innovation but rather foster a creative and efficient approach to technology development, empowering us to significantly enhance learning experiences in the transport sector.
Wiener Linien operates extensive tram, bus and metro services, necessitating comprehensive and rigorous training for all drivers. The traditional training regimen includes theoretical lessons, practical simulations, and supervised driving.
However, this conventional approach is time-consuming and resource-intensive, particularly the track/line-specific training. Recognising the need for a more adaptable and less resource-heavy solution, we proposed a smartphone app-based solution, the VR-App Tram — an innovative training tool that leverages virtual reality to simulate real-world driving scenarios.
The Challenge: How can the tram driver training program be enhanced by introducing a virtual, easily accessible tool that helps drivers learn route-specific details like landmarks, signal locations, and neuralgic points prone to accidents?
The Solution: The VR-App Tram, was developed inclose partnership with Wiener Linien's team — Johanna Freunek, Anastasija Rosic, and Ralph Fromwald. This app allows drivers to virtually experience and interact with their tram lines, learning critical route information in a simulated environment accessible via smartphones.
The journey from concept to execution involved meticulous planning, user-centred design, and iterative feedback loops with end-users to refine functionality and usability. Our collaborative effort focused on integrating comprehensive real-world data to craft a tool that not only teaches but also adapts to the learner’s pace and style.
The VR-App Tram pilot project proved to be are sounding success, leading to improved training efficiency and greater flexibility in the learning process for tram drivers. The ability to access training modules anytime and anywhere significantly reduced the logistical challenges associated with traditional training methods.
What our partners from Wiener Linien said:
"Thanks to our new VR app, we have the ability to easily access challenging traffic situations around Vienna’s train system and avoid making common mistakes in those spots. Ferenc and his team were always available and very open-minded to changes base don our needs and requirements.” Anastasija Rosic, BA eLearning Specialist
"We enjoyed a lively, valuable exchange between the makers of the VR-App and our company. Their high ideals of sustainable and easy-to-use training content come clearly evident in their work." Johanna Freunek, S82 | Projekt management
Encouraged by the success of the VR-App Tram pilot, Wiener Linien and our team are enthusiastic about continuing our collaboration. Plans are underway to expand the app's features and possibly integrate additional training modules, aiming to cover more scenarios and include other aspects of tram operation. This forward-thinking approach underlines our commitment to continuously innovate and lead in the application of technology to enhance public transportation training.
The VR-App Tram stands as a testament to the power of innovative solutions in transforming traditional practices, particularly in industries as critical as public transportation. By embracing technology, Wiener Linien has not only enhanced its training capabilities but also positioned itself as a forward-thinking organisation dedicated to continuous improvement and excellence in service delivery.
